“In the darkened hall of life, I watch the projection screen of my brain. “ Toyen

To&Jen is a site-specific performance that comes closest to a kind of “pantomime exhibition” set in a gallery space. The work is inspired by the life, personality and work of TOYEN, and was created as a graduation performance at the HAMU Department of Non-Verbal Theater.

“There’s a fly crawling on the window, a fat one they call a blowfly. It’s been crossing the windowpane for ages. People usually loathe them, but they are actually beautiful, metallic green and blue, with translucent wings woven with silver threads. It’s been crawling on the glass for a long time, and it doesn’t know how to get out. Outside, the sun is shining, the colors are brilliant and a breeze is blowing. She could fly to her heart’s content. It’s just the window keeping her here! There must be a crack somewhere to get out of this dull, gray room. Away from the loneliness. And finally! There it is! She’s found it. It was high time. The sun is just setting, the sky has turned a beautiful red, she’ll enjoy a little more of these colors!
